Cal in the news

Posted by Steve | October 2, 2007 at 10:15 am | In Players/Alumni |

In his weekly Forde-Yard Dash, ESPN analyst Pat Forde mentions Cal and Jeff Tedford as three of his points, expecting the team to enter the November 10th match up against USC ranked at least 3rd in the nation:

California (4). Ranking: third in all major polls. Dash ranking: third. Highest ranking since: 1952. Cal’s leading passer that season was Bill Mais, who completed 30 passes on the year. That’s just two more than current QB Nate Longshore (5) completed in the Saturday triumph at Oregon.

Why the Golden Bears are there: They’ve come through when the nation is watching, beating Tennessee handily in the biggest game of the opening weekend and then winning at Oregon in the biggest game last Saturday. They’ve also scored a minimum of 31 points in every game and rank third nationally in turnover margin. And in case you ever doubted the importance of turnovers, know this: four of the top five teams in that department, and seven of the top 17, are undefeated.

Also, in Mark Schlabach’s On (and off) the Mark, he gives positive marks to Cal, in particular LB Anthony Felder, DeSean Jackson, and Marcus Ezeff.

  1. It’s working! My efforts in the ESPN fan poll are working! I go there at least once a day since the beginning of the season.

I rank Cal #1, USC #2, any other pac-10 teams listed (now Oregon, ASU, UCLA) 3,4,5, next in line are any teams that have played pac-10 teams (or teams that have played teams that have played pac-10 teams), then I start at the bottom of the poll and work backwards always leaving LSU dead last.

Join the campaign! Keep Cal #1!

  2. With no Cal game today, all we can do is watch the results of other teams’ games and ponder their impact on Cal. As of early Saturday afternoon, the returns are already looking promising. No. 5 Wisconsin just lost to Illinois. What’s the significance of that? Well, coming into today, Wisconsin had the longest current winning streak among Div. 1A teams. According to the Cal Athletic Dept. website, the longest streaks before today were these:

    14 - Wisconsin (5-0)
    12 - LSU (5-0)
    8 - Cincinnati (5-0)
    7 - Cal (5-0)
    6 - four other schools

Since there’s a good chance that both LSU and Cincinnati will lose later today, come Monday, Cal could be ranked no. 2 in the country and have the longest current winning streak. (Some of the four other schools with six-game winning streaks will probably win today, so Cal would be tied at 7 games, but I’m not going to complain.)
